No One Knows Why We Exist

If there is one indisputable fact, it is that no one on this planet knows why we exist, or even if there is any reason why we exist. Despite centuries of reflection and 7 billion people alive today, the most fundamental fact of life is that no one can say why you, me, people, life, the earth, or the universe exist at all.

There are various theories - called religions - that billions of people accept without question. But for those who do question their existence, the fact is there are no solid answers.

So, the first question we need to ask is why does anything exist? Then, why do we exist, as we do? Anyone who can't answer these questions cannot tell you what you should do with your life, as these are the basis for all other decisions.

While I admit that I don't know the answer to these primary questions, I will say that I have some theories. They are just that - theories. I don't claim that I know what God wants, or that God has spoken to me. I don't know if God exists, or if he, she, it, or they speaks. I merely offer a theory for the big picture. You cannot prove or disprove it, but it offers a theory that can be tested. At some point in human knowledge, we will be able to test this theory.

My theory - as discussed on this blog - is quite simple. The known universe is a limited place of time and space, a patch of existence that follows certain rules. Outside of this patch is an unknown existence. But in our universe, time, energy, and other parameters exist within fairly constant and well-defined limits.

My suggestion is that this is purposeful. Time goes in one direction because that is how it was "set up". In my view, the universe was created, and the arbitrary aspects of time and space show us something about its purpose (assuming there is one).

What purpose could a universe serve? Or, why would some being create a universe and time, if something did in fact create it? Why create a universe and not something else, if one could presumably do such a thing?

My theory - which I go into in more detail on this blog - is that some being created this universe as a place for beings to evolve. Specifically, for the evolution of intelligent, conscious beings - such as ourselves. That would suggest that we, as the most evolved species on our planet, have been given a job by our creator(s). Part of that job is evolving further through various genetic and electronic techniques. Once we evolve to the next level, we will hopefully be more aware of the entire process and focused on evolving to the ultimate point, which is probably the goal of this whole set-up.

In other words, our job is to evolve. We have been created to evolve - from single cell organism to higher organism to mammal to ape to tool user to conscious being to computer and Internet designer to whatever comes next. As we evolve, we learn more about the universe, ourselves, and the ultimate potential/goal of our race.

If this theory is true, then sadly we are wasting A LOT (nearly all) of time in non-evolutionary efforts. Wars, oppression, sports, collecting wealth, etc. are all wastes of time, energy, and talent. What we should be doing - if my theory is correct - is spending our efforts on learning, acquiring knowledge, and advancing as a species. While we are advancing (technologically, culturally), it is very slow, compared to what we could be doing. Does that matter? I can't prove that it does, but that is my opinion.

Well, that is my theory. It is plausible but impossible to prove, and I see nothing that disproves it. If true, then you and 99.99% of humanity is on the wrong track. If true, we will get there eventually, as mankind stumbles forward, but sadly so much suffering and wasted time will have happened. If correct, then we could move faster and reduce human suffering by evolving quickly and smartly. But we'll find out, eventually.

There are as many theories on this as there are people on earth. The funniest part is how we cannot agree on the one things we have in common beyond the theories, and that is...at the end of the day, we honestly have no idea.

Actually, we do agree on that, which is the point of my post. That is in fact a big step forward, to say no one knows why we are here. As this is the most fundamental issue of human existence, failure to settle this issue - which is not possible at this time - means the first thing we should be doing (besides merely surviving) is answering this question. Any other pursuit, while possibly pleasant, is insane.

OMG I can't believe there is someone else out there who thinks the same as me.... Hope for the world yet!!!
And perhaps that is the point, it is all about awareness, it is not what you believe; for belief is purely a subject response. It is the act of understanding, responding etc. Just like the character in a computer game, their awareness is what the player gets off on. Sorry to be crude but perhaps that is what God (if you believe in him) has invented us for; rather like the Greek gods using us for their amusement.

But whatever it is, its all good fun. And from my perspective that is what life is really about! I love the confusion of it all, and what's more I know I will never know the answers to the meaning or secrets of life, because my brain (or any on this earth) just does not have the capacity for the FULL TRUTH.

Please understand that the process of evolution in a given species accelerates in inverse proportion to the lifetime of said species. This is demonstrated by the fact that scientists can witness evolution in bacteria much more easily than they can in humans. So, our duty, according to your stated goal, is to expire sooner.

Well your theory is pleasant but a tad bit human centered. I mean if the reason that a "being" of some sort created the universe was to eventually have higher life forms like humans evolve and prosper then this being was horribly inefficient. I mean this being had to wait over fourteen billion years just to be able to see the humans that he created the whole universe for. Not only that, the part of the universe that actually contains these intelligent beings (as far as we yet know) makes up such an infinitesimally small part of the universe- we're talking like much smaller than .000000000000000001% If your theory is correct then this being has done a horrendous job.

If you ever read the bible then you will see your answer. Think about the knowledge thats really in it, who can really make that up. Why is the bible here our creator wants us to have knowledge and understanding. But sadly to many people cant grasp it, read the bible on your own and you will see the knowledge thats in it. No offense but we as people are to ignorant to even make up such since thats in the bible.

Few questions:

If your theory is ture, Why do you think we are wasting time? May be we are in right direction?

Why do you think time moving in one direction? It could be multidimensional and multi-directional and very complex for us to understand? And so some times you feel that you are there where you started after so many years of journey.

Why we as beings need to evolve first? For what? If you know the goal you can find ways. I see currently no goals for evolution except materialistically. The same way scientists and other non-god believers think.

Even a big bang is a theory and based on assumptions only. No theory ever exists or will come to prove this. So do you think that waste of time in discussing these things?

Excellent article as I feel your theory is close to what I feel also.

We as humans still after all this time on this planet, do not know for sure what the answer is to the "why" and "how" for the existence of the universe and life itself. This leaves open the door for many theories as we know why and how all this exists in the first place.

I tend to lean towards an intelligent alien creator or force that makes all this possible beyond our human comprehension as opposed to something creating itself out of nothingness.

I also feel there is an ultimate purpose for life and when we leave this one we will evolve into a more advanced life-form.

It just seems that this life is set up with so many challenges and problems that we have to overcome over our lifetimes along with the learning that we get from all this, that there seems more than just moving through this life and then we die for nothing.

Also with all the inequalities that this life seems to bring on others as well as misfortunes to many, it would seem that there will be a place for these people also to enjoy something better than they had here.

What was the purpose of Hitler killing so many people and no restitution for him and what about the people he killed? Surely their purpose was not to be born simply to be killed for nothing?

These are the things you wonder about and make you think maybe just maybe, a higher intelligent life form will one day bring all this into focus for us limited seeing humanity.

When you see a watch you instantly know it was made by something and did not create itself. I see the universe and life also in this way. I see it as having purpose and was created by something. That something I do not understand and neither does anyone else or we would not still be exploring and asking questions about what is in outer-space etc.

I close with the comment posted here that I thought summed it up quite nicely... laviera, photography & people lover said...

It´s hard to see what the purpose of the "evolving" you refer to as being our job could be. Evolving for what purpose? Why didn´t our creator simply create us already evolved to whatever his/her/its ultimate aim for us is? I find it impossible to believe that human existence has any ultimate meaning. We are born and we die soon after - no purpose has been served by out fleeting presence. There can be no purpose.

My problem is I do not want to be at the mercy of anyone - even God, assuming He exists. That way you can give the name God to anyone - even a slave master who will define the purpose of your existence.

There are many theories to what the meaning of life is. I have read a lot of this subject from philosophers, the bible, scientific research and recently I have read some solid information from http://whatisthemeaningoflife.co
It explains what the meaning of our lives in in this universe, as well as the meaning of the universe itself pretty solidly. I recommend the read.

Why didn't our creator(s) simply tell us why were were created? I don't know (no one does), but the fact that he or she or it or they didn't seems like a clue that may (or may not) mean something. My personal opinion is we weren't told why we exist for a reason, like being sent on a mission without an objective. We have to find out what the objective is. That is part of evolving, like a treasure hunt. I could be wrong, but that is what makes sense to me - it's the search that is part of the solution. I know this may sound like gibberish, but either there is no purpose (which is possible) or there is; if there is, then we weren't told what that purpose is either by choice or by mistake. It seems unlikely (but not impossible) that beings would go to all the trouble of creating a universe and reality/time/space and then oops forget to tell the beings in that reality/time/space what their purpose is. So, if there is a purpose (not proven), then the most likely (but not inevitable) reason for us not knowing what that purpose is, is that this information was withheld on purpose, so that we might search for it as part of our "assignment".

Second, it's more accurate to think of natural selection as a process rather than as a guiding hand. Natural selection is the simple result of variation, differential reproduction, and heredity — it is mindless and mechanistic. It has no goals; it's not striving to produce "progress" or a balanced ecosystem.

Evolution does not work this way.

This is why "need," "try," and "want" are not very accurate words when it comes to explaining evolution. The population or individual does not "want" or "try" to evolve, and natural selection cannot try to supply what an organism "needs." Natural selection just selects among whatever variations exist in the population. The result is evolution.

No-one knows why we exist but this tells us something, mainly that whatever being or process was behind our existence does not want us to know why we exist.

The explanations given in the world's biblical texts don't give a valid reason behind our existence; they just waffle on about how this is a moral testing ground and the world exists so we can see the error of deviating from God and by so doing become subservient and embrace that reality.

That is still no reason for creating us and all the lifeforms in the universe after all God did not need to create us - without need how can our existence have real meaning?

If you and I or nothing ever existed what conceivable difference would that make to anything? A: Nothing because none of us would be aware of anything.

It is impossible for the human mind to conceive of an entity(ies) just existing without ever having been created; It defies logic but here we are and this it would seem has to be the truth.

The alternative of nothingness just evolving into something appears ludicrous. Why would nothing suddenly become something? When I talk about nothingness I mean nothingness in totality, no thoughts, no physical matter, no energy, no life - NOTHING!

God according to scripture has always existed, if this is true then I personally find it hard to comprehend how human beings can ever grasp this.

But if it is true then God can grasp it so we must be very unlike God and probably not made in His Image.

Personally I find it quite annoying not knowing why I exist and in many respects I resent it and I am not pleased that if there is an intelligent being behind my existence then their lack of information on the matter is not appreciated.

My views may change as I get older but I somehow doubt it.

Basically I agree with you, and this theory does not exclude religion, actually it includes it. Also, you can't say that wars are not also part of this. We react faster and do more after wars. We learn and discover more during wars, so...maybe it's not a waste of time but just a cheat to go faster to the next level.

I actually thought there finally is someone outthere who "understands" or at least... is like-minded. but as it seems, you arent. Whenever i read any of your latest Blogposts, i can feel fear, and anger. everything that controls you is your own uncertainty about things, the things you cant explain, the things you still want to figure out. i cant even tell if its curiousity or stupidity that strikes here. on one hand, you seem like an intelligent person, thinking deep thoughts still trying to figure out whats going on around you, nearly about to do anything to finally catch a piece of cake in life, a hint, or at least a path to walk on to find answers...and yet you still have the other hand, childish conclusions, harsh sentences following each other just showing all the fear you carry around with you of the fact that we all have to die alone in the end. you try to seem smart and brave, i bet you even could see your own as a leader for those who share your thoughts on things, someone to anonymously rely on during "hard times" maybe... but all that is ridiculous. do you go out on the streets n really try to change things? why arent you one of those people "working on medicine" , working on "our life´s essence" ...the meaning of life is us. you are us. we are one. no matter if we talk about atoms here, nor about religion , nor about specific jobs or qualifications- we all are one, and yet - we´re all alone. you with your fear, like me with mine. and even if you dont recognize it, between all that stupidity lied the fact that you share even that thought with at least one other peson on this planet. we all are different, but yet equal. we all are puppet´s in our governments show. you arent one of a kind, neither am i. even the fact that you brought up the nazi / german history in one of your articles shows, that you, as a self-thinking human beeing, arent able to have a look over the rim of a teacup. you live in stereotypes yourself and i bet you still think al germans are lederhosen-wearing nazis who tend to eat sausages and sauerkraut all day, that only chinese/japanese people could affect technology or whatever. you praise racism, hate, and stupidity yourself. and as long as you dont get off your high horse and realize that you´re nothing better than the one´s you always start to "whine" about, nothing on this earth will change. you are the perfect example why our evolution is put on hold- we all are standing still. all we humans do is complain about everything, care for our own good and just mind our own business, full of hatred and fears of doing shit. that´s why we cant evolve. we stand still. til we die. or at least until people finally find out that stupidity is not only about "scholar knowledge" or the books you read or places you´ve been- knowledge is what you make out of it. even out of the tiniest bit. knowledge is knowing that there is noone better or worse than us, realizing that if there´s such thing as god, no religion really would be able to praise him- if not only for the money. you still need to learn a lot of things, before you start hurting your brain again about the things you dont even try to undertstand.

For what I've read in this blog, the only thing we all agree on is that we don't know. Some talk about God and the bible, but if this is true, here comes the dilema, maybe god created us but the bible was written by man and this collection of books was edited, not all books are included in it. Why? does religion have something to hide? I don't know, but why the secrecy. And speaking of the roman catholic religion, wish is the one I grew up with, why did they kill so many people, IN THE NAME OF GOD!!!, forcing people to join or else. I think is enough for know, just my drop of water into the lake. Think about it. THINK!!!

If humanity was created, then it was created for a purpose. What if that purpose has been served?
Why would our creator or creators want to communicate the reason for our existence,we are irrelevant,if we were not irrelevant then we would already know the answer.
Ask yourself this question, Do you think the creator/s or creation of the universe which is our reality, also create mankind?
Or could they be 2 separate entities? I think, but dont necessarily believe, the universe came into existence via another reality/dimension,its purpose was so that life as we know or even may not know it, could exist.
Lets think of our existance this way. if you was to travel back in time a few hundred years or so and brought up the subject of dinosaurs, nobody on earth would have an inkling what you were talking about, but today we know they existed. What were the parameters for life on earth for them to exist 225 million years ago.have those parameters changed or are they the same,i would suggest they have changed.life existed 225 million years ago and probably much further back than that.Apparently we came into being(evolved) because of an event that happened 65 million years ago when a asteroid/comet hit the Earth. From this we learn that the universe had created conditions on our planet that life could exist, before a high percentage of all living creatures were wiped out by that impact event.now take a leap of faith and lets say why couldnt somewhere else in our universe in some far distant place, life spring up again, and that lifeform existed 225 million years ago at the same time as the dinosaurs on Earth, but fortunately for them no catastrophic event took place to wipe them out,so they evolved, became technolgically advanced over hundreds of millions of years.mankind has existed for approx 7 million years, modern human, homo sapien for less than that.so if mankind was to exist for another 225 million years or equivalent to a surviving life form that may have existed as long ago as the dinosaurs.then where do you think mankind would be,do you believe we would evolve?do you believe our technology would leap forward,I for one believe it is feasible.do you think we would not be able to travel to the stars,do you believe if it is possible to bend space, that we wouldnt be able to do it.i believe we would.Do you believe continued population growth for that amount of time the Earth could support it,things would change, because they would have to,new worlds will have to be found, for if they were not mankind could not exist, unless forms of population control were used,ie war, viruses etc etc.but to some this up i personally hope there is a grand designer, and that designer created the space/time universe so that forms of intelligent life could exist .All religious books were written by man as a medieval form of law and order to control the people.

I think many people have already evolved enough to understand this, even as a government and all. The only wars were in anymore are mostly due to terrorist organizations. I think the world governments all agree, for the most part. The land disputes are for grounds and resources to populate there particular race and government ideals. There's even space disputes for knowledge and alien resources. For the most part, we are already at peace. That is, into the comparison of our past. I believe the next steps of evolution are already taking place at a phenomenal rate...and succesfully and steadily increasing. Our future of evolution more mental, less physical. Look at how far the human race has come over the last hundred years compared the last 2000. The rate is even increasing. I believe that within the next hundred-fifty years. As a people, I couldent even see how we could evolve further mentally beyond extreme space exploration and concepts you or I could nor even begin to fathom.

P.s. if anyone ever wants to discuss this topic or has a phenomenal theory;I would love to share thoughts.

If anyone is interested, my views on the questions "Why does anything exist?" and "Why is there something rather than nothing?" are summarized below and I have more at:

sites.google.com/site/whydoesanythingexist

Thanks.

I think that a thing exists if it's a grouping defining what is contained within (e.g., the surface of a book, the definition of what elements are contained in a set, the mental/neural construct called the concept of love defines what other mental constructs are contained in it, etc.). The grouping is equivalent to an edge or boundary that gives substance and existence to the thing.

In regard to the question "Why is there something rathe than nothing?", I think that what we've traditionally thought of as “the absolute lack-of-all” (no energy, matter, volume, space, time, thoughts, concepts, mathematical truths, etc.; and no minds to think about this “absolute lack-of-all”), and not our mind's conception of “the absolute lack-of-all”, would be the entirety, or whole amount, of all that is present. That's it; that's everything; there's nothing else; it would be everything that is present. It is absolute nothing, and yet it is the all. An entirety or whole amount is a grouping defining what is contained within and is therefore a surface, an edge and an existent entity. In other words, because the absolute lack-of-all is the entirety of all that is present, it functions as both what is contained within and the grouping defining what is contained within. It defines itself and is, therefore, the beginning point in the chain of being able to define existent entities in terms of other existent entities. The grouping/edge of the absolute lack-of-all is not some separate thing; it is just the "entirety", "the all" relationship, inherent in this absolute lack-of-all, that defines what is contained within.

I agree in some parts of your theory, though I don't believe the universe has a creator such as a God, etc. If the universe had to have a creator, as it is an existing matter, wouldn't God or this cosmic higher force have to have a creator too (if such one exist)?

"Well, of course not" a christian might say, not noticing that they just broke what they claimed to have everything existant must have a creator.

Nevertheless, I totally agree that mankind is and has wasted many precious decades on social media, games, entertainment, etc when we should be evolving and enlarging our knowledge to more advanced theories and answers.

I think common sense points that simple virtues like helping others, being good to all etc. should be practiced.......because there is not much that can help to understand our existence. I believe in God but not in religion. Some one who has created the whole universe will not be interested in such mediocre, minor or rather fussy institutions like religion...........

Who knows? We don't really know anything. We don't know if there is a purpose, or if it's a good one or a bad one. Maybe we were created to entertain a god that has died or left. The only logical course is gaining knowledge through science and other means. Everything else is just chatter, opinion, etc. Yes, be nice to people and kittens...but the lessons of the world is that the strong dominate and eat the weak...so, maybe that is the correct way. No one really knows anything. Nothing. But, someday.
