Are You Insane?

It would seem that a rational being, faced with the inevitabilty of death, would do everything possible to preserve his life and the lives of those he cares about.

Therefore, it would seem logical that everyone would fervently support medical research that will prevent aging and death. Yet this is not the case.

While every parent would stop their child from walking into traffic and being killed by a car, and would not allow their child to drink poison, the vast majority of parents seem unconcerned that their child will grow old and die, or is at risk for future horrible diseases like cancer. Why is this?

I don't know.

I believe that soon, aging will be stopped. Perhaps this will even occur duing my lifetime. Or perhaps my generation is the last to age and die. How sad that human progress, with its glorious future, should leave behind my generation, aging, fragile, and dying.

I say that if you do not support medical research to save your life, and do not support politicians who will increase medical research, then you are allowing yourself and everyone you know to die. Which is insane.

Maybe the problem isn't that people don't want to end disease, but that mostly we're doubtful of success.

qraal - I don't understand this reasoning. Of course it's possible.

I think there are things that are more important than preventing age and improving medication. Things like global warming, for example, are becoming a threat. I don't know exactly how, but the weather IS changing, even in Taiwan, which is where I live. I'm a Korean, and Iknow Taiwan is hot, even if I adjusted to it a little. I have been living here for 8 years, thinking that the winters here is just like autumn in Korea. I always thought that way, until this year. This year, the temperature went down to 7'C, and now it feels like Korea, at the beginning of the winter. I'm not kidding about this. This is the first time I had to buy a hand warmer to warm my freezing hands (they never froze before in Taiwan), and I had to wear two or more shirts when I go outside because it's so cold. Even if all of us live to a thousand years old, we might see the world we love end, which isn't really worth it.

I believe; you have too much faith in medical research.

What is the basis for yor comment? What facts back up your statement? I can offer the fact that you and everyone on Earth is going to die. I can offer that we have extended human life due to medical science, and people can live longer, more productive lives. And I can describe findings in genetics that show our cells are programmed to die, but that it may be possible to change the "programming".

Yes, I have great faith in humanity's potential, but so little faith that any more than a tiny fraction of people realize what that potential is.

All I ask is that you dare to dream about something better than the short, miserable, and pain-filled life we now live as humans in the era before genetic alteration that prevents aging.

Your idea of living forever is childish. And you haven't answered Tory's argument either. How do you propose 10, 20, 30, 100 billion of people live on this poor Earth forever? Allthough in US you have cheap food, some other parts of the world have famine already. Or even since forever. Some parts of the world are running out of living space (e.g. Japan).
So how do you propose we feed/give a place to live for so many billions of people that don't die? It's an idiotic idea. :-)

I don't think that the idea of living forever is childish.10,20,30, 100 billion of people can live in this universe. No one said that u must leave on this poor Earth. But there are ppl that are saying that it is impossible and it will be impossible for human race to leave on other planets."It’s better to regret something you did, than something you did not do" Don't listen to all the cunts there. Try.
